Intel Corporation Forms (1968)

On July 18, 1968, Integrated Electronics Corporation, commonly referred to as Intel, was founded in Santa Clara, California. Intel has grown into the world's largest semiconductor chip producer based on revenue.

In 1968, Intel was founded by semiconductor inventors Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore under the executive direction of Andrew Grove. In 1971, Intel made its most dramatic impact on the computer industry when it created the world's first microprocessor called the 4004. The 4004 fit 2,300 transistors onto a one-eighth-by one-sixth-inch chip, which originally took 38,000 vacuum tubes to replicate the same power.

Intel became an early developer of SRAM and DRAM memory chips, and over time Intel built a lasting relationship with the Microsoft Corporation. By the early 1990s, Intel’s Pentium processor became the industry standard processor for personal computers.

Today, Intel’s microprocessors are found in more than 80 percent of worldwide personal computers. The microprocessor is also used in just about every type of electronic device from computers, to calculators, traffic lights, microwaves, cell phones, GPS systems, etc. Intel’s line of products has grown to include many types of chips and processors, integrated circuits, motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers, hubs, switches, routers, and a slew of other related computer devices.
